Is it Accessible?

Writer: Kay WillowKay Willow

So not our normal topic but accessibility is an issue not just for mobility aids but also sensory-wise, mobility is easy to illustrate and was on my mind a lot. There are multiple factors in making something accessible or inaccessible. Most people think it's just putting in a ramp or elevator and boom everything is accessible. Not at all how that works.

The artist will show up to a place and won't be able to actually go because her wheelchair won't work on that or her family will try to make it work by rolling her chair backward and having to ask for assistance from whoever is around. Never be ashamed to ask for accommodations. When the artist goes out to eat she asks for places to turn off the music or turn it down and they usually do so she can enjoy her meal and avoid an overload. Asking for assistance with manual doors is also something that is common when she goes out. These are things that are accessibility issues that most people don't give a second thought to.

Needing accommodations or help is not a bad thing and is not a bad thing to ask for.
