Because Vic represents vocal tics she gets vocal tic attack's (also called tic storms) these can happen in many different ways such as her screaming or repeating words or sounds, vocal tics can also change the tone or accent of the ticcers voice. They can last anywhere from 10 minutes to several hours and are completely draining. Tic attacks can have triggers or happen randomly sometimes being tired can be a trigger or having a cup of coffee or sensory stimuli can trigger one and stress is a common attack trigger along with intense emotions but triggers all very person to person and no to people have the exact same triggers or set of tics. The main difference between normal ticcing and a tic attack is during a tic attack there is no break between tics. For example the Artist tics every 4 to 90 ish seconds normally but during a tic attack she tics ever 1 to 2 seconds or less. (Yes, this is based on her actual tics and life experience her Tourette's is considered severe)
You cannot control tic attacks. Once they start they have to pretty much run their course and you have to wait them out. However You can still do things to help calm the person in their tic attack, now everyone is different and you should talk to them about what they need before the need arises for you to help them in one and what they need you do to to help them during one. Especially since during a tic attack (vocal tic attacks definitely) verbal communication may not be possible. Here is what helps me though, getting me to a soft and safe spot (a couch, a bed or the floor with a blanket or coat on it), having my sensory gear handed to me, familiar distractions put on such as movies I have seen before, and just sitting with me. These attacks can be really draining both physically and emotionally especially if they happen in public and can be hard to watch at times. In public the most comfortable place to have an attack I have found is the car but you do what you have to do and the floor or a bathroom is also a decent enough place. You just have to calmly explain to the employees what is going on or having a small card on you that explains it is also mega helpful. I know the TAA has a card that has information on it or you could make your own (I made my own). Hope this helps.
