Swearing Tics

Copralia, or what our friend Bleep here represents or it is also referred to as swearing tics or inappropriate tics. Not a whole lot is known about them but they aren't super common actually only like 10-15% of people with TS actually have and deal with these tics. These tics also aren't just swearing it can be inappropriate phrases or sounds. The artist deals with copralia and copaxia (inappropriate gestures) and deals with it by laughing and apologizing a lot. These tics often get a lot of looks from strangers and can be really offensive to people but they are also incredibly embarrassing. Just like every other tic they are uncontrol able and unintentional. If someone has these tics there is nothing behind it. No they aren't actually thinking that or mean it. Tics are not what we are thinking and we do not mean any of the things we say.

Some people miss understand this and think everyone with tics swears which is wildly untrue as diagnosis criteria for TS is at least 2 motor tics and 1 vocal tic that is consistent for a 1 and developed before the age of 18. However tics wax and wane meaning they get intense and then calm down. Tics also can develop and switch at anytime. So if you see you friend with tics doing something new it may just be a new tic they are struggling with. Sometimes the inappropriate tics don't develop until later and can be really difficult to deal with especially in public settings.
